Well, I have a 99 GS3 w/ 86k on the clock.

I have never had any problems with original starter/ignition.

Well tonite I tried to fire her up and I just heard "Click, Click, Click". Well it so happens that the GS only fires up 1 out of every 5 times now.

Pretty sure its the starter. When did your original starter go out. And were is a good place to shop for an OEM one?

Thanks fellas.

Recently had mine replaced. Cost about $450 all together. My uncle did the job for me, so it wasn't a big deal. They had to take apart the ENTIRE engine mount to do the job. Needed to replace the intake manifold gaskets as well. Wasn't a pretty sight to see I tell ya!

Thanks guys, UncleRay, what were some of the signs u knew it went out?

Did it just click click click sometimes and start other times? Or did it just go dead? Cuz I can start it every 1 in 5 times.

wow, I'd expect the original starter to last at least 100k. guess the fact that my car is almost a decade old has alot to do with it as well.

anyone know what the dealer recommends changing the starter at? like how the 90k recommends changing the timing belt?

i'm sure the results will be wide ranging.

Those are classic signs of starter or a low battery. Pretty sure its the starter. I rebuilt mine for 27 dollars for two contacts, the solenoid pushes a plunger onto two contacts that wear out after a while. Take the endcap off of the starter and you will immediately see them. Hard part is getting the starter out.

Rebuild your Toyota starter with new contacts, and be good for another 10 years.

starter went out at about 75k, bought the rebuild kit for $30 did it myself in about 5 hrs. Hard part is getting to the starter for a 99 GS400 which is under the intake manifold.
