Default Clearing engine codes?

I have a 99 GS400 that has the engine light on. The code is for the front cat convertor. The light will go out on its own, but I would like to be able to clear the codes myself. Is there anyway of doing this aside from buying a machine to read and clear?

Thanks

Brian

disconnect the negative battery cable for about 15min to reset the ecu. you'll probably lose your radio presets, but whatever.

if you're not comfortable doing that, take it to autozone, they'll read and clear the lights with a generic OBDII scanner for free.

Why does the light go off for awhile then comes back on?

sounds like something is not working right. i would try to fix the problem thats causing the code instead of just making the code go away. maybe O2 sensor? hopefully one of the engine gurus will chime in

Even after disconnecting the negative battery terminal, the code will still continue to pop up after the ECU runs through it's self-check. It'll be back after driving a while.

It's most likely the o2, my girl's IS does that. As long as it dosen't flash you should be fine.

I bought one of those hand held units on egay for around 30$ and its great. But it sounds like the sensor is slowing failing. I wouldnt worry too much about it, until it stays on forever. Just save some cheese up and get it fixed in the future.

Autozones I've been to say they're not allowed to reset or delete the codes
