Default Check Engine Light

I have a 98 GS400 and the light came on last week so I reset the ECU and it went off for a few days and came back on. I have access to a scanner and I had planned on checking it this weekend but it went off on its own yesterday. If I scan for codes this weekend, will the trouble code still be there? Are they stored until cleared or do they go away when the light goes out?

Thanks in adavance,
Carmen

It should still be in there. I have had some issues some times with a lean P0171 error only to find the light go off, but the code still should remain. Pending codes (ones that show up P/D) also should show up, as they are not enough to trigger the light, but still show up with a scanner.
