Post Lexus has their work cut out.............

You guys know my stance and how I feel about my GS. But with the new 5-Series abounding and the new E-Class practically here, (with several variants including: a complete panoramic roof, and 460-hp AMG!!!) not to mention all other 400-hp+ sedans on their way this summer (Jag S-TypeR, Audi S4 w/ 360-hp V8 etc.) And what's really humbling to think that I have read about "minor changes and possible same platform usage" for the next GS! And can we forget about the fact that nothing new will hit until late 2003 as a 2004 model?! We are all entusiasts here and we know that cutting edge performance and styling are important to us all. I just truly hope that the new ES & GX with their very modest powerplants are not a sign of what's to come.....

TX, as you know, companies such as BMW and Subaru have been able to churn out power from considerably low hp (around 225) to compete aggressively with cars having almost 35-40hp more(think the TLS and G35). Also consider the LS430 (290hp) outpacing the Q45 (340hp), now my questions is: would you rather see Lexus lower 0-60 & 1/4 mi. times or increase hp with only slightly better results ? (I ask this only in curiousity, because I'm torn both ways myself) I, like everyone else, get caught up in the HP wars, kinda like keepin' up with the Joneses so to speak, and I am genuinely concerned about power and style based on what I've seen come out of the House of Lexus lately. Granted, neither the 5-series or E-class ever really wowed me, including these new pics, but it would be nice to see Lexus leave no doubt whatsoever when the new GS arrives, not like the ES where there's alot of "yeah, but..." i.e styling and power.

Most definitely! Yeah you're right, "hp" is a great gauge to rate by, but if Lexus does a new GS with say 360-380 hp and it out runs 400+hp cars to 0-60, 1/4 mile etc. then hey, I'm with it! I just don't won't to see such great & reliable cars get left in the dust!

I am not really big on who has more horses and whose has a better power plant, I am stuck on Lexus because of thier comfort price and reliability, I am not the type that races or likes to accelerate all the time. I think Lexus the way it is should be more than sufficient for me and a majority of the Lexus buyers, albiet it would be more fun to have a high horsepower V8 for bragging rights, but the majority of Lexus buyers dont buy the car for that, they buy it for the looks and the comfort and the reliability that comes with them. But damn, that Mercedes is freakin schweeeet!!

I'm with LexusPride. As long as Lexus has a competitive 0-60 and 1/4 mile, I'm happy with any hp/tq.

ALRIGHT IF YOU GUYS WANT SOLID PROOF? LOOK AT THE LS430, I DONT THINK THERE IS A LUXURY CAR LIKE IT ON EARTH, SURE IT MAY HAVE A SORT OF BLAND LOOK COMPARED TO SOME OTHER LUXURY CARS, BUT THE QUALITY AND THE LUXURY IT HAS, IT'S UNBEATABLE IN MY OPINION. IT ALSO WON THE BEST LUXURY CAR AWARD... PLUS ITS FASTER THAN THE S430 BENZ AND 740IL. LEXUS MAYBE CONSERVATIVE WITH SOME OF THERE CARS BUT THEY AREN'T STUPID, BECAUSE IF THEY DIDN'T THINK THAT SPEED OR HP WASN'T IMPORTANT THAN THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE MADE THE GS400/430 TO BEGIN WITH, I'VE SAID THIS A FEW TIMES ON CL, BUT I READ A WHILE AGO ON A WEBSITE INVOLVING NEW CARS AND UPCOMING CARS, AND THERE WAS A RUMOR OF A GS430 WITH UP TO 460HP, NOW IM NOT SURE IF IT'LL BE THAT MUCH OR NOT BUT U CAN SURE BET THAT LEXUS WILL DEFINETLY REACH THAT 400 MARK

O YEA, LOOK AT THE LS430 GT, AND THE IS430 COMRESSOR... THOSE CARS ARE GONNA KICK ALOT OF @SS WHEN THEY COME OUT, AND STILL HAVE THE LEXUS RELIABILITY, WHILE THOSE 400+HP GERMAN CARS ARE BROKE DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY, WE'LL STILL BE ABLE TO FLOAT PAST THEM -=)

It's the performance that counts, not peak horsepower.
