Default How much ATF do i need for drain and refill?

just like the title. if i just do a drain and refil, how much ATF do i need? i went the lexus dealer, they told me 4 qts. but from this website

http://bananags.grantham-internation...il/index1.html

he said 2 qts. it's a big difference. so i just want to make sure before i do it. has anyone done it before?

i have a 2001 gs300.

I think drain and refill pan only is like 2-3quarts. If you do the pump out method(disconnect transmission cooler hose and route it into a bucket while engine is idling) then you can get as much as 5-6 quarts out of the system and then another 1 out of the pan. I've managed to drain 7 quarts at once before.

the manual calls for 2 quarts, but it can also vary depending on how much your driveway angles.

ok pardon my lack of knowledge. but a quart is roughly a liter right?

i did a drain and fill on my tranny recently. basically didnt know how much so i bought 4 bottles (4L total). what i did was drain it, then emptied it into another container (4L left over empty bottle of washer fluid). filled up roughly 1/2 so about 2Ls. thats how much i put back in. since technically u got probably another 2L in the torque converter, and probably another 2L all throughout the rest of the tranny (i kind of remember someone saying its about 6L total of tranny fluid in the whole system) and its relatively easy if not easier to do than an oil change (oil change u need to take the plastic splash shield a bit so the oil doesnt spew all over the place, might as well change the 2Ls out every other oil change or something.

1 quart is about 0.95L so 2L sounds about right.

Our tranny holds about 12 quarts (11.35L) of fluid.

Toyota/Lexus sells 4L jugs. Convenient if you need a lot of fluid but dont want to pay a lot for individual bottles.

Our manual states that drain/refill takes ~2 quarts.

Thanks a lot guys. i think i will go with 2. btw, if i put a bid less than what i should, would it mess up the tranny? let see, if i just warm up the car and pull shifter from parking to d1? and check the dip stick? cuz i think that's what i am going to do.

Drain & fills are a waste of money imo. A great deal of dirty tranny fluid will remain in the tq converter. To extract that fluid, you will need to do a complete transmission fluid exchange via the T-tech machine.

not if you do them BEFORE the fluid gets nasty, then it's just regular maintenance and the fluid stays nice and never needs a flush.

Make sure to buy more fluid than necessary. I always buy 1-2 quart more than what's required for the job. You never know when you need just a bit more. Plus you wont have to buy as much later on.

If you put just a bit less, you should be okay, but bring it back to the correct level when you can. Our transmission is sensitive to fluid level. If you're below the minimum hot level, your transmission will be slipping.

DO NOT RELY ON THE COLD LEVEL on the dipstick. It is very very inaccurate. You'll find that once you fill the car up to the max hot level, the fluid level will rise over the top when you let the car cool down.

Turn on your engine and shift from gear to gear with 5 seconds in between. Ideally, the car should be driven for about 10-15 minutes. Thats when the fluid should be in normal operating temperature. Park your car and then check your dipstick. Fill it up to max hot.
