GS400 vs. S500
S55 is pretty strong. Don't normally care for stoplight bragging rights but stock S500 and CL500 are not as fast as a GS4. I have driven all three and the S and CL are not as quick and don't feel as quick either. Not sure on specs and don't know if anyone has any heads up info but I would be a little surprised if either of the Mercs is sub six second 0-60, just didn't feel like it driving them. Of course the guy with the Z06 is doubled up in laughter at the site of a GS4/S500 "race" anyway.
Specs:
S500
0-60: 6.1 secs
302 hp
339 Ibs/ft
4,133 ibs
CL500
0-60: 6.1 secs
Same engine specs
4,070 ibs
SL500
0-60: 6.1 secs (again....)
Same engine specs
4,125 ibs

And now for the sacrilege. To tell you the truth, the CL600 felt about comparable to the GS430. Might be faster, might not, but it feels very close. The truth is that most of my comparable feeling comes from me driving the Mercs while my wife is following along in the GS. Hard to believe the S would pull the GS for top end. Great fun this.
S500 has almost identical speeds as GS430, and it's 1/4 is actually 1 mile faster. That explains why it would pull harder on the freeway. Try to remember both are stock #'s, can't compare modded to stock.
Most people here don't like to see magazine test numbers because they read BS mags that gives out BS numbers...like C&D ,Motortrend. I like Road and Track, just read their test procedures...they will tell you exactally WHERE they did the testing and HOW they did it, along with other detailed information. They won't just say "ah...yeah GS goes from 0-60 in 5.7 secs" quote-Motortrend ;But they don't have ANY testing to back that claim up. R&T test numbers are more real. Just take a look at their testing...very detailed not just BS.
Sorry for the blurryness but It's a scan from my magazine.

Any reported number is suspect. Knowing how the number was arrived at is good but not very useful for a given heads up on a given day. Pretty much the reason why they hold drag races instead of just mailing in your best time of the season and deciding who wins. And obviously we don't want to go near the magazines getting "special" cars which BMW seems to be doing intermittently while Lexus is just as much at fault not even having 17s on the majority of test GSs I have seen. I didn't instrument anything but under comparable situations, my feeling is that the GS430 would be slightly but consistently quicker than the S500 and CL500. Can you eat up half a second in reaction time? Definitely. That's what is so great about bragging about street racing. None of the "events" are comparable. Someone will inevitably get a jump. So what do the published numbers mean? Not much, really. Both damn fine cars. A huge percentage of the public at large would love to have either one. There will always be someone with a quicker car than what you have.

can't beat them all!!!
I need some more practice with the E-shiftin.
