Winter tires worth it? (winter driving)
just because it's a snow tire doesn't mean you can drive too fast for conditions. a lot of water on the road will make ANY tire hydroplane if you're going too fast.
i've had them for 3 years. i have no issues with them, and i live up here on the westcoast, where it's rains almost 24/7 these days... just don't expect them to peform like hi-perf summers. the tire shop i bought them from commented that they have customers that run them all year round because they don't seem to be adversely affected by warm summer weather either (ie. chunking, accelerated wear), like my old blizzaks did, albeit the blizzaks outperform the hankooks in the winter, but they also cost much more.
Last winter was HELL with my 2GS. Even a TINY bit of snow on an incline and I couldn't move... at all. The wheels wouldn't even spin. Just that rapid clicking sound and failure. When I was in an area where I COULD drive.. I had little to no control. Granted, the tires on my 17s were almost bald.
Now I have 19's with new tires on them.. but I'll be taking them off when it starts to snow.. so I'll be putting back on the bald 17's.
My question is.. if I pick up some winter tires.. will I have much better luck? ... and do they make a huge difference compared to brand new regular tires? I'd rather not have to take the tires off at the end of winter just because they're winter tires.
Also is there some sort of control I'm not turning on/off that will stop my car from deciding whether or not the wheels should be spinning in effort to move?
Thanks

not sure what your winter is like, but my snows are already on. with all the bad fall/winter weather, i would have had less opportunity to wash my 19's, which means corrosion. and all it takes is one leaf-covered pothole or a black ice slide into the curb... bye-bye expensive wheels
i have the hankook winter tires, definitely bang for the buck considering other winter tires cost almost twice as much and they perform just as well...but i mean who expects to be taking a corner at 1g on winter conditions anyway?
not flaming you but i don't know what you were expecting... near bald tires on a RWD car in winter conditions??? i'm just glad this post wasn't about you wrecking your GS because of it

I'm glad I now have this place to ask my questions and get great feedback everytime. Thanks guys.
i really liked my blizzaks when i had them on my old fwd honda (i forget now which version i had)... they were invincible. i remember one morning i was driving down a road that was covered in black ice without knowing because i was gripping as if it were dry, but all the cars around me were sliding all over the place or stuck
... but the compound was so soft and they barely lasted me 2 winters.
the only bad thing i have to say about the hankooks is that it's not too good in deep snow, but then again the gs isn't exactly a featherweight so i may be in error in blaming the tires. last year we had a day where there was over 4-5 inches of snow on the ground and no snowplows in sight (5am trying to get to work), and i was floundering all over the place... but as long as i didn't stop i wasn't getting stuck. climbing hills was tough... supra lsd, snow mode on, and it was opposite lock taking up 2 lanes of traffic all the way up... even transit buses were keeping their distance from me
