Default Thoughts on winter tires

I'm old enough to have experienced snow tires. Snow tires are not what we have now. What we have now are winter tires. Snow tires helped in deep snow but wasn't anything wonderful.(impo) winter tires were out for some years before I tried them. I had the preconceived idea that the would perform like snow tires did. When my daughter got a car and it was her first winter driving I got her winter tires. The first real snow (about a 4" snow) I took her car out because I wanted to see what the tires were like. WOW! I was so surprised at just how much traction there was. I then ordered winter tires for the Land Rover and Chrysler . I then put winter tires on the cars we drove during the winter every year thereafter. That was till moving to Houston. I can't imagine driving through winter without winter tires again. The only drawback was you had to keep telling yourself that it was slippery, slow down. My daughter would come home saying cars were sliding trying to stop at every light or stop sign, and how she didn't at all.if you've considered getting winter tires, do it. I promise you won't regret it.

One of the first things I did after buying my 2002sc430, purchased a set of Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires.

Running Falken Eurowinters on OEM rims for the SC and Blizzaks on the CLS. Been impressed with the tracking at hi speed for the Eurowinters. Little bit more noise but nothing terrible. Not that we need it here - ydays high was 72 degrees. But our cars are dangerous in the snow - winter tires very necessary or we will slide everywhere. RWD with a V8 in front is the worst combo for snow traction.

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Last year and the year before (Polar Vortex here in Chicago area- 16 inches in one night), I only survived b'c of my RunFlat Blizzak tires! Before I got them, I was completely out of control. Every trip in the SC, my daily at the time, was a gamble. After last winter, the tires started to give me problem and even had a blow out at 70 mph on the highway as they were over 12 years old and the rubber was degrading. Now I' m on all season tires and my winter rims. So far since we've had a mild winter this year and I haven't had problems with the all season, but those Blizzaks made a huge difference in my traction in those horrible winters! Now I have 20" rims on the SC, and there aren't any Blizzaks in this size, so I'm going to have some troubles ahead if mother natures turns cruel. With that being said, we also own a Mazda CX5 now so that would be our main winter car if things get worse.
