Default Bad timing = bent valves?

I had an oil leak coming from my cam seal, so I took it into Lexus to get repaired.

Called a few hours later to see the progress, and they told me... Umm we have a slight problem.

Apparantly, when the tech was putting my stuff back together after changing out my seals, he jumped timing by a tooth or so.

When they ran the car, the idle was real low and it had some knock. So they'll be holding onto my car for a few days.

So the question is, do you think they bent my valves, and if so, how many could they have bent?

I'm actually not angry, b/c the way I see it as they have to tear off my head, replace whatever is broken, clean up the head, install a new headgasket, and install other new gaskets that are needed, so its actually in my favor. I have 120k on the clock and a new HG wouldn't hurt.

He had to of skipped more than a tooth to bend the valves. My bet is that the aligned the VVTi pulley the wrong way. That alone will cause the timing to be about 45' degrees out of sync on the intake cam. It happens quite often for people that haven't worked with a VVTi setup. I'm not sure how the dealership messed that up though. They work on these cars all day long. Maybe it was a "new" or novice service tech working on your car.

Either way, you got it good. Brand new valves and complete head rebuild at 120k miles included in the cost of a timing belt job. I'd say you got a hell of a deal lol. Now...time for turbo afterwards Oh, bring them a 2mm headgasket and see if they will drop that in for ya...I mean they have the whole head off the car might as well right

They'll let me know today after they do some compression checks and such to see if any are bent.

I talked to the tech, he's be there for about a year and he says this is the first time it has happened to him.

I got an es for a loaner. too bad they don't have ISes for loan here.

Will they have to rebuild the whole head though even if one valve is bent?

If so, I'm ecstatic!

Talked to the tech earlier today. Him and the master tech tore down my motor after it failed the compression test. 4 bent valves, but they're going to replace 8 just to be sure. They're also going to replace any seals and stuff while they are down there. They have to order the parts tomorrow morning, so I should have the car back by Thursday.

And this should cost you ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! From being in and around the automotive service industry for 17 or so years, I can tell you that the very first thing the vast majority of techs (We used to call them "Mechanics, if they were good and we liked them, or grease monkeys if they were incompetent and we didn't. I knew a LOT of grease monkeys) think about when they make an expensive mistake is "Is there any way I can make someone else, i.e. the car owner, pay for this." I have seen this attempted, sometimes successfully, a thousand times.

Of course I wouldn't pay for them changing the valves. I'd raise hell if they did. The only thing I'm paying for are the cam seals that they changed for me b/c I was leaking oil.

Question: if you've got bent valves, how long before the engine blows on you?

Well, the engine wouldn't run very well with bent valves. You would basically be losing major power in any of the affected cylinders. The dealer is replacing his valves for free...which is a good thing
