Question Radar use with GS400

Does anyone know anything about how well radar detectors work from a windshield mount with the GS400? I know some of the more recent luxury/performance cars have coated windows which dramatically reduce the effectiveness of radar detectors. I believe this has been documented with the Audi A8.

Does anyone out there know for sure that this isn't an issue with the GS400? Or, has anyone used their detector in the GS400 soon after frequently using it in another car and not noticed a difference? I'm having problems getting consistent power to my Uniden from the lighter plug and before I hardwire it to the dome light I want to make sure an install is even worthwhile.

Any comments are welcome. Thanks

I have the Passport 8500 mounted to the front windshield and it works perfect. It has yet to let me down as a matter a fact saved my azz today while trying to get a 2001 330ci to run against me. I could not get him to pull with me...I am doing about 85mph and beep, beep, beep KA band going off and about a 1/2 mile up there he is Fl state trooper just awaiting.... Passport 8500 saved me's azz again. So, to answer your question no problems here.

does the radar detector detect the beam before the cop can get a lock on you? can you actually have the detector scramble the cops lock on you as well and send back wierd numbers?

Thanks for the reply GScorpian. Erfan...radar detectors detect radar/laser from the police. They don't scramble the signals or cloak your car. Also, a radar detector will not save you from a cop who is well positioned and gets you with instant-on or laser. Waht a radar detector WILL DO is alert you to cops that are sitting there with a radar gun on hanging out their window or who are using it up ahead of you.

Once you get to know your detector and how it responds it will alert you to dangerous situations where police are up ahead zapping other drivers. This way yu can brig your speed down in time.

My passport 7500 works great. It's mounted ON the dash to the left of the instrument cluster (passengers don't even see it). I attached rubber feet and tiny pads of velcro to hold it in place. Cable's hidden down the side of the door, under the mat and up the right of the driver's seat and into the center compartment's hidden power outlet.

Erfan,

I haven't researched radar detectors for a couple of years. HBack then the Valentine 1 was clearly the best and the most expensive. I hear good things about the Passport 8500 as well. I chose a higher end Uniden because it performed well in one of the auto mag tests and cost 1/4 the price of the Valentine.

Bit, I am going to get one in a couple of days from my local car toys or Tweeter store. I will also try a best buy too. I want to get one with the little feet as well and velcro it under the dash somewhere.

Thanks

I have the Pasport 8500 and I am very happy with its performance so far(which means no tickets). The Passport works very well but it still picks up a lot of false alarms in city areas but its usually X band so you know its not police radar generally speaking. Works great with K and Ka Band picks both up at very long distances. If Ka comes on you know smokey is not far away. Laser I have been very lucky so far and have not experienced this evil law enforcement weapon...there is not really anything you can do against laser except pull over and start pleading your case.

You may also want consider the Valentine One a friend of mine has it and it seems to work very well also.

Erfan you can't just buy a radar detector and mount it under your dash. The vast, vast majority of detectors need to be mounted in the windshield so that they can pick up the radar. If you want to mount the body under your dash you will need a remote sensor mounted in your grill, etc. There is another thread going right now concerning remote radar detectors.
