Do a litlle searching on the maintenance section here. To save you a little trouble, I always stick to what the manufacturer suggest, which in the 2gen GS is 5w30. If you're going to use a "regular" oil filter you should replace in 3000 miles. I personally go with the amsoil filter.

I use the mobil1 oil filter and with my last oil change used 10 W 40. It gets real hot here in FL and this was a recommendation of my mechanic. My GS has just over 94k

theres a TSB from toyota that suggests 2JZ and a few other engines should use 5W20 instead of 5W30 for better fuel economy

more info in the maintenance forum

Don't dump full synthetic in your engine unless it was used since the begining of the cars life.. synthetic thins out at high temperature making it susceptible in creating leaks that normal oil would not cause.. a good idea is to try castrol synthetic blend or mix up full synthetic with something else, like royal purp. or gtx, I put a quart of lucas engine treatment to keep the valves clean and cause I have high millage..

p.s. if you love your car use TRD filters, if you like your car a whole lot use k&n..
I've been using them for about a year and I haven't had any problems

I run Amsoil Synthetic European Forumla 5w-40. Gonna switch to severe duty/racing 10w-40 for my next oil change. I'm using this current oil change with a K&N filter. Next change I'm gonna switch to the Amsoil EAO filter.

I've been starting to use 10W-40 since the clearances in the engine may have opened up because i have 238,000 miles.

Not to hijack this thread but while we are on the topic of oil and oil filters....just how important is it using a TRD oil filter as opposed to a regular FRAM that my mechanic would use. Would there be a difference in performance? How much more does the TRD or K & N filters filter out more than another universal filter like FRAM? I have used both the dealer and my mechanic for all of my oil changes over the last 4 years and now I'm wondering if I have been doing my car a dis-service by having my mechanic put any filter in there.

Your GS uses the same filter as my RX. I used to use a K&N, HP-1002, but recently switched to an oversized HP-2009, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=295468

A filter is a filter. Not really sure there is a "performance" aspect to one. As long as it filters to the factory specs then it should be ok.

You dont actually gain performance, but you gain quality. There are cheaper filters that do not hold up in the long run. Either they leak or the poor filter elemental gets destroyed. Some people have ruined their engines because of loss oil pressure due to the filter.
