Ok, unfortunately the GS400 we bought did not come with the master key. We went to the dealer and asked how much it would be for a master key and they said more than $200 because the computer would have to be "re-flashed" is this true? I know many "smart" keys can be cut by any locksmith and have a resistor put into the head of the key to turn the ignition, but since I don't have a master key to have it cut, would they still be able to do it? Also, the dealer said they will need to re-flash the computer, but is that really necessary or are they just trying to make the process sound more difficult than it is?
you dont have a remote key? Its true that the computer has to be programmed and it's a lot like super nintendo (up up down down left right etc... LOL) but its pretty easy. Then you would have to program the remote. I have the procedures somewhere. I can send it to you or you can search, I got it from this site.
You gotta have a master key to copy though. I had a "master" key which is just the key with the remote. i bought a key from ebay and had it cut(supposedly laser cut that's why it cost 30 bucks just to cut it but I didn't see the guy use a laser) But it was much cheaper to go this route than have Lexus do it. They wanted 200 for the key plus programming.

got the blank key cut by a locksmith that could cut lexus keys.
the key i got off ebay was a remote key. it came with instructions to program the remote part, and to program the car to accept the new key (transponder or something)
What year is your GS? The reseeding starts at the 01 or 02. Prior to the thet ECU had to be replaced. Do you have a flat walet key? If so, does that have a transponder built in? What most people don't know and other forget to mention is that the transponder on your flat key is a master.
My dealer charges 195 for the key and another 110 for the reseeding if you do not have a master and only 65 if you do.
i have a 99 gs300. i bought it used and so it only came with 1 key. i was reconmended to see that locksmith as they have experience cutting lexus keys.
from what i have read, and the instructions that came with my ebay lexus key, it can be programmed via some steps like hitting the brake 5 times, and gas 6 times or something.
the cut keys have no trouble opening the doors, however the we will see if it works when i try the instructions to program the key to the car.

Thanks for the replys guys! I don't have the flat key either Since I don't have the flat key either is it still possible to have a master key cut? Or is this really something I do need to have the dealer do? Oh and it's a 98 GS400.
You might be misinformed actually. Since it's a GS400 so it can't be that new. You might have to swap out the ECU (that's what Lexus would do), so ask them to make sure exactly how it is and look into 3rd party reflashing.
Ok, I'll take it in so they can take a look at it. Who would I be able to call to have it reflashed? Is that once the new ECU is plugged in or by using the older ECU?
