I would have to say keep the cleared 98-00 tails. Since the car is black IMO the orange on the 01'+ tails doesnt look bad but i still say go with the old ones for the custom look. It's a great mod to just waste, i plan on doing it myself.
I just noticed this but since you have a GS400 badge, i would keep the 98-00. If you debadge, then the 01+ is what I would do. But its your car, I think you should do what you think is the best
With regard to the red-out...I think ElitistK meant spray painting or tinting the orange/amber part on the outside of the tails...leaving just the small clear area (reverse).

If your searching for an outside opinion I think you should keep the 01' tails the eluptical (did I spell that right?) shape with in the tail light goes along with the outer shape of the tail light it's self.. 01's also appear to have more depth..
