I have a 98 and it is Hard Drive based. I am told I can go to any Lexus dealer to have it updated. We are supposed to have 2 free updates regardless...But who knows what happens when you actually show up there.
Hmmm, Lexus should give out a free update...especially since my DVD is from 2000 and my car is a 2001...they gave a DVD that was already 1 year out of date when I got it...time to call Lexus Customer Service!
Hmmm...wonder if the "showroom" cars have the newer DVD....hmmmm.....

I have a 98 GS400 which I bought used after it came off lease. The orevious owner never updated the hardrive. I brought my car into my local Lexus dealer to have the 60K service done and the service mgr informed me that since an update had never been performed and since I was giving them my business they would schedule a free upgrade even though I was out of warranty. The upgrade was noticeable.

I hate having to put north, south, east west, pre-fixes before the street name. Such a waste of time trying each pre fix before you can find the right street. Mapquest, you just type in the name (sometimes spelled wrong) and bam your there.
I had the latest version as of January 02 I think. The difference is that additional cities were added. For instance I had hardly anything but major highways in Milwaukee before my upgrade. After my upgrade I have the whole city I believe. There was also a very slight change in the graphics but hardly noticeable.
Just a quick headsup, bought my GS4 with just over 50K on it. Was told it had never been updated so just bring it in, when I did they informed me that the updates were only free during the 4yr/50K period. Nothing free after that, even if it stull says Jan 98 on the system. This was at Wilkie Lexus in Devon, PA.

Thanks.
I upgraded in early 2001 to the Sept 2000 version and it definitely had a lot of updated restaurants, roads, etc., but I was pissed the exit numbers were STILL wrong (old ones) on I85 in Atlanta.
I have mine on order and will be installed free. The dealer made this BS that it will be updated "for goodwill" purposes since it was never updated. I have 53Kmiles.
I called 800-25-LEXUS and was told by a customer service rep that 98 model years get 3 free updates for LIFE, regardless of mileage. 99-00 models don't.
It takes 2-3 weeks to get the part since this is ordered and shipped from Denso in Japan.

Will someone please post a pic of the stock GPS antennae? I'm confused if it is the one under the rear deck next to the 10" sub-woofer or the twin-wire element affixed on the lower right corner of the rear glass.
