Default How do we clean the MAS

I've read a lot of threads regarding sluggish throttle response off the line.

I'm going to be cleaning my throttle body ASAP.

Some have replaced their MAS with great success. Can I just clean it instead of replacing it?

How do I go about cleaning it?

Thanks guys. CL is the best source for help!

Don't clean your MAS...the mass air flow sensor is very sensative.

if damaged it will cost approx $550 (junkyard) or $1125 (dealer) to replace.

Just Do

1. Throttle plate/body cleaning
2. Seafoam Treatment (do a search)
3. BG44K if you can get some
4. Full Tranny Flush with Toyota Type IV fluid
5. Rear Diff fluid change
6. Fresh set of Plugs (NGKs)
7. Then reset your ECU

You should get some throttle response... ie "snap" back...right off the line.

I hear this isn't good for high mileage cars. I have approx. 150,000 miles. Good or bad idea? Is this the same as a trans. fluid change?

As long as you spray the cleaner into the MAF gently, you wont ruin it. Many people have done this with success. I've probably cleaned mine over 5 times already with no issues.

A new MAF cost $200 from the dealer and it takes 5 minutes to replace.

you can use NGK. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, search around and many people are getting longer life out of their NGKs than Denso. Its not as aparant in the GS forum because everyone likes to stick to Denso. I went from TM to denso and my car was slower. It's noticeable too

My next plugs if I dont go with TM will be NGK.

One member suggested using a q-tip to clean the wires! I've been searching the net and many other forums suggest not to touch the wires with anything.

So soaking them at low pressure and using a blowdrier to dry them, is a good way to go?

No. Buy yourself a can of CRC Mass Air Sensor cleaner (~$4). Spray it into the MAF lightly. Spray it somewhere else to get a feel of the pressure, before you go shooting it into the MAF.

The CRC evaporates quickly so there is no need to blowdry. In fact, do not try to blowdry anything
