Default Fastest automatic sedan in the world?

I remember hearing that the 1998 GS400, with 0-60 of 5.7 seconds was the fastest automatic sedan in the world when it came out....and I also often brag about this . I remember thinking that the car that beat it was the BMW M5....but did the M5 come in auto? Does anyone know which was the first automatic sedan to be faster than the GS4 and become fastest automatic sedan in the world?

I believe the present record goes to MB .

The Brabus V12 BI-turbo has the record:

Top speed: ~220mph (350kph)

4.0 seconds from 0 - 60mph,
11.7 seconds from 0- 120mph
30.6 seconds from 0- 180mph

Yeah, back then it was. Before I sold my GS400 I used to brag about it too Although back in the 60s some of those muscle cars may have been faster? I'm not entirely sure about that though

Yep the GS had it's day and still holds it own. Here's a decent link for sedan specs through the years:

Ya but does anyone know what car dethroned the GS4 as fastest automatic sedan in the world and what year it was? Jaguar XJR maybe? Thats the only high powered sedan that comes in auto that i can think of for around that time....

My guess is the 1999 Mercedes Benz E55. 349hp and 391ft-lbs of torque. 0-60mpg in 5.0 seconds and a quarter mile in 13.6 seconds.

The E55 couldn't have been the first automatic sedan to take over GS...

there must have been something before it.

I was thinking the E55 but didn't think that it came in auto....if it did then the '99 E55 is probably it, I don't think there was anything faster than the GS before that....and for the record the E55 was in a way higher price bracket than the GS4 so we could still brag

The E55 debut as a 1999 model. the GS400 debut as a 1998 model. I dont think anything came out in between

The GS 400 was indeed at the time the fastest accelerating OEM automatic sedan in the world.

2 cars came out shortly thereafter. Some of you mentioned the E55, the Jag XJR also debuted after the GS and did 0-60 in the low 5s
