Default Bike Rack - Yea or Nay

Okay CL, I realized last year that my mountain bike can't fit in my trunk even with the front wheel off. I decided that the ONLY rack that I'll consider buying is one that fits on the trunk and not a roof or rear hitch model. Now the rack I'm thinking of is not a cheap one where it can scratch my paint easily. Will this rack be something I could "get away" with in terms of me and my ride not looking silly with this bike and rack. The guy at the bike shop showed me his car ('04 Acura TL good condition) with his bike rack attached and no visible scratches in the area where the bike gets held at. The pics of the rack are below so let me know what ya think and let me know of anything to watch out for.

You won't look silly. It all depends on who looks as it and who sees it as silly. I used the one that I have (made by Trek) a few times to get my bike to and fro... I dont care how it looks because I need to transport it. If someone else thinks it's silly on my GS... thats fine, because they are usually stuffing their face with McDonalds at the same time. If you need it, get it.

I had a bike rack on the back of my GS similar to the one you're looking at. I didn't care what people thought about how it looked. The good thing about the one that goes on your trunk is that it can easily come off . I didn't have any scratches on my car at all and I was able to carry my bike and a bike that belonged to a friend of mines. I say if you're a bike rider hit the trails and screw what anyone else thinks. You'll look more like a tool with half a bike sticking out of your trunk. I don't know how much you spent on your bike, but I wouldn't want to run the risk of it falling out on the highway

do a roof rack. it adds more hp compared to the trunk rack.

My road bike fits in the backseat with only the front wheel removed. I wouldn't do it with a dirty MTB, though.

I'd used a roof rack on my other cars...Thule applications that I saw for mine are trunk mounted. Not my desired preference.

Given a dirty MTB and if it doesn't fit in the trunk...what choice is there? I'd get it. Or buy a SUV to transport it....that's a lot more $$$.
