Default gs300 ecu

The engine check light came on and the local mechanic replaced one of the oxygen sensor. As I was driving away, the check light came on again and he reset it with the explanation that i should drive it and if it came on again I probably would need an engine computer which I think is called the ECU. He implied thousands of dollars which relied upon lexus part from a dealer. Big money. Anyone have experience with rebuilt or remanufactured parts?

what is the exact problem? usually a check engine light does not need a brand new ecu.

I am assuming the code is the same as the last time which indicates a "heater failure" of an oxygen sensor. Since the sensor was defective but has since been replaced with a lexus part, the book says to replace the ecu of the light comes on again. It is Sunday and the mechanic is closed so I am guessing at the code. I ordered a code reader but it hasn't arrived yet so I am guessing about the code until I go back to the mechanic.
