Default check engine light

I have a check engine light that comes and goes away
now its back
any ideas what it could be
78k miles
1998 GS400

Or what is a common check engine light malfunction in these types of cars?
the Power cable on the battery cable looks like it has been changed and also the dome light dims and the stereo also dims a pioneer navi n1
could it be the battery or terminals?

To be sure.... go to Autozone and use their OBDII scanner... pull the code.... and then search that code here on CL. Good luck.

better hope your alternator isn't out. my power steering pump was leaking on my alternator and took it out. it was pretty expensive to fix the ps pump AND alternator. I would get the alternator checked and see if it's charging the battery.
