Default Question about updating navigation dvd

Hi guys, I got a question regarding upgrading to a newer nav dvd and I am hoping some of you guys who already have dones this will know.

Currently I have a 01 GS with nav which still has the original version 1 2000 dvd. For the most part it still works fine but occasionally it gets annoying when it misroutes me due to new stretches of freeway being built after 2000 or new on/off ramps.

However, I am having difficulty swallowing the thought of paying $200-275 for just a purely map update. however, I hear that when you first put in a new dvd version in your nav, your nav ecu will automatically update itself and versions older than the dvd that was just installed with no longer work. Does that mean inaddition to updating the map, the newer version of the nav dvd will also install a newer software version of the navigation interface?

Meaning in addition to the updated map data, will I get any additional features or upgraded graphics to go with my new dvd update purchase? If that is the case, then I will have easier time justifying the purchase.

Thanks all!

You get new streets, that's all, it's not upgrading the operating system, its just giving you a newer version of the map. If you want to be able to see more streets, then that's the justification.
