need a new tps
my check engine light came on again. ran the codes and said accelerator pedal postion sensor malfunction. so i take it to the dealer to see how much it would cost. the tps sensor is about 290 and another 200 to install...so i said go ahead and install it..turns out that didnt work and i need the tps in the throttle body...that part cost freaking 900...anyone know where to get one cheaper? maybe a salvage yard or something? i've dumped waaay too much money just trying to get this car running right..i guess thats what happens when you buy from a used car dealer.
The dealer is quoting you a price for a whole new throttle body assembly which includes the tps sensor. Go to lexuspartsonline.com and look under electrical, then powertrain control, then tps sensor. For a gs 400 it is $64 and change(gs 3 should be right around the same). Bring this to your local toyota dealer and let them install.

i should have been more specific. the gs300(not sure about the 400) has 2 tps sensors as i was told. the first one can be changed out..they did that and it wasnt the fix. the other sensor in within the throttle body but is olnly sold as a whole unit. meaning i gots to buy the whole damn throttle body. my caR IS also in need of a timing belt.
so my choices are pay around 2500 to get the sensor and timing belt and water pump done or save another 1-2 thousand and get a swap. not that harrd of a choice.

im not sure what the code was..i have it written down but the prbolem was"accelerator pedal position sensor malfunction" they replaced the tps but said that wasnt the fix. i would have to change out the tps within the throttlebody. i called carsons and they helped me out. they said i could buy in sensor inside seperatly instead of having to buy the whole throttle body. im going to order the sensors next week.
the problem is inconsistant. my wife got no pedal response but then later it works fine.

i thought i mentioned it was a 1998 gs300...if not then sorry..i was desperate to get it fixed.. but that tps wasnt the fix so they didnt charge me..they said theres another sensor in the throttle body. dude at carsons toyota said it was called the throttle motor or something like that.
the code was p1121 or p112..i forgot which one.
my wuestion is that its a pedal positoin sensor malfunction. why wouldnt they just switch out the pedal position sensor instead of messing with the tps sensor?

You might just have to calibrate the tps. I know back when I had my Supra I had to a few times. I unbolt it, clock it a few different degrees until the code stops coming on.
If it was a GS400, I have a spare one for you.

try to recalibrate it.
I dont know if it will work with the GS300 but this was for the aristo (should be the same)
***It may or may not work. This was what I heard from A jdm aristo owner over in the UK. This is suppose to recalibrate the APP sensor with the TPS.
1. Turn your key to the second click so your accessories are on. (do not start your engine)
2. Press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold for about 10-15 seconds.
3. Let go and turn key to off position.
4. Start up your car and test drive it.

Just a followup.....I replaced my Pedal position sensor (throttle lever assembly according to the part description) and the car is running perfect. I have put nearly 500 miles on it without any issues, so I think I've got it corrected.
