How many keys should I reasonably expect when buying a used?
I'm in the process of buying a GS 300. The dealer only has one master key and a valet key. I personally believe that they should pay or split the cost of a second master key, because the vehicle actually comes with 2 master keys, a valet key, and a flat key. Is this unreasonable? What is standard practice?
It's not that anyone else will drive it, it's just that if I lose the one master key, it will cost a fortune to re-key the car. Whereas if I lose one of two master keys, I can just get another one made.

you can always find a locksmith who can copy laser cut keys, but you'll need to find a blank master key. its also easy to program a new master key, just do a search on this forum for the instructions.
oh and welcome to the forums, you will find a wealth of information on here

Thanks. Sorry for all the newbie questions. I'll poke around in the security thread for further advice. Looks like they are just missing one master key - flat key is there.

The dealer told me there were only three keys (2 master and one valet), but I found a key card under the driver's seat about a month after I bought the car! It's a black, plastic, credit card-sized with a key stem in the middle and "chip" in the upper corner. Instructions on how to use it if you lose your "real" keys are also printed on it. I think it's pretty cool. I keep it in my wallet. Are these standard with the cars?

I keep it with me everywhere I go. So many times i "almost" forget my master key in my car. Thank god I dont have to use that creditcard key. lol.

i think its a crappy sign when a car comes with only 1 key. my 02 es300 actually only came with one key and i bought it and theres no probs at all! i plan on getting another programmed master key sometime. i really could care less about the valet and credit card key.

my gs400, is300, and sc430 all come with 2 master, 1 valet, and 1 card key. and that's exactly what i would expect if i get a used car too
