Default Timing Belt

I called Tustin Lexus in socal to get a quote for a timing belt change for my 98 GS400. $1600. I questioned what that included....That gets me a water pump, new belt , and cam & crankcase gaskets.
Being a little more resourceful...I was able to get all of the parts for $220. Does anyone know of a resonably priced mechanic in the area (949)?

Also, what else is a good idea to swap out with the same amount of labor? Spark plugs maybe...anything else?

I recall paying about that much for the same work done (when I had my 90k service done), but it also included new iridium (sp?) spark plugs I believe. My only regret was not taking it to the current shop I got to now for work, as Im sure the work wouldve been better, and at a lessor price.

Hi silverlexo,
That price seems really high but then again its the dealer. I own a performance shop in orange county and I also have a GS400 that I do all the maintenace myself on. I have done the timing belt service on my own vehicle so rest assured that I will know exactly what to do. I am not promoting my shop but I would just like to offer my service to you if you would like to save some money on this service because I frequent this forum alot and feel like I can give back a little to other lexus owners in orange county. Feel free to call me and discuss your needs, you can come by the shop and inspect my own car if you like. Just trying to help out a fellow CS member. You can reach me at wickedgarage@sbcglobal.net., Sincerely, Kevin.

Yeah, the 90K service includes timing belt, water pump, and the gaskets you mentioned. I have a local shop that does overflow work for our local Lexus dealer. The Lexus dealer quoted me $1200 to do my timing belt/waterpump job on my ES300. I checked the local shop and they did the timing belt/water pump, gaskets and tranny power flush for $600 (this was a few years back and mind you this was on my ES300 not on a GS400). If I were you I would call mugengs and take him up on his offer.

absolutely! I went to the toyota dealership for mine and it was 550 for the gaskets, antifreeze, water pump and belt. I get an extra discount on stuff because i know the manager, but itll still be alot less than 1600. good luck
