Hey guys, (long post but please read)

My GS got rear-ended today

The damage is not all that bad, a couple of deep scratches that got through the paint and some discolaration, probably from the paint on the other guys' car that could possibly be buffed off. Also, my exhaust tip (the tip's that came w/ 2000 Platinum GS's and now are standard on 2001's I believe) got 'pushed in' on the left side but the exhaust does not appear to be damaged.

Because it was a rear-end accident, the other guy is at fault and his insurance is gonna pay to fix things.

What should I do?

I suppose the damage could be fixed by simply repainting the the bumper, but I want things better than that and I have a feeling the Lexus dealership might just want to replace the whole rear bumper.

A couple of questions:

Is the stock rear bumper 1 or 2 pieces? By this I mean, is everything under and above the CHROME line one piece or are they two separate pieces?

How much would a STOCK rear bumper cost to PAINT and INSTALL, basically get everything back to new again?

Ok...I never really paid much attention to bodykits before...but now this has got my attention

I'm thinking maybe I can get the insurance co. to go ahead and pay and install an aftermarket rear bumper?
Perhaps it'll be even cheaper to do than getting a stock bumper from Lexus??

I've gotten some prices of rear bumpers from Hiro's site and GTautosports, good, full rear bumper replacements are in the range of $700-800.

How much would it cost to get a good body shop to paint and install this thing?

How does the quality of some of these aftermarket kits (Veilside, RMM, etc.) compare to stock?

Thanks for all suggestions and advice!

int,

sorry to hear your mishap....this is what i would do:

contact your ins.co. and see what your options are and how much they are willing to compensate you.
if i remember correctly, the factory oem bumper costs ~$500 from steve. the labor would cost ~$3-400. depnds on how much $$$ you get out of this; i would def consider tunre body kits.

You better check the exhaust that got pushed in. I saw a bmw being repaired because it got hit in the back and the whole cat-back got pushed in as well . Check to be on the safe side.

Intellexual,

Actually I had the same thing happen to my car a few months ago. I had the same questions you did, and the estimates I got were only about ~$350 for replacing the stock rear bumper (not incl. prep work and labor), which was much lower than aftermarket ones. This would most likely NOT be the case if we were talking about Civics, but when it comes to getting stuff for our Lexuses, things get expensive. Unless you get something like L-Tuned or RMM, they seem to be less expensive than other bodykits (e.g. Blitz etc..) you might end up paying the difference, nevertheless still a great opportunity to mod your car if you had intentions to do so in the first place. Even w/ all the hassle, it's still a blessing in disguise
