Engine Clean or Not???

Well guys lets just say if i happen to do an engine swap....how could i check to see if the engine im getting is clean...as in not stolen and what not?

the vin should be on it somewhere I believe...

I'm sure that carfax can run the vin and tell if the whole car was stolen. maybe call the cops and ask them to check the vin
