Remote starter
Hey guys, since its hella cold here in chicago I'm thinking about a remote starter. Can anyone suggest a good remote starter. Do they make systems specially for lexus? I found this on ebay would this work on a lexus gs?

Or how about VIPER 791XV , can this system be used?
Thanks, Stan.

I have a Compustar in my truck and am putting the same system in the GS. When you buy one of these they give you a lifetime warranty... YOUR lifetime. Then your shop just swaps it from car to car to car as you get new cars. I had it in my Accord, and took it out to put in the GS next month. They have the best range by far of any units, plus they have pageback. I have the 2Wss-s and that 6000 foot range is legit. i can hit it standing in the MetroDome and my truck is parked in a parking ramp a couple blocks away. Prettty nice.
Compustar units...
If you want an average unit just get anything made by DEI, they are the primary supplier of Hornet, Viper, etc... they cover about a dozen brands.
I like these folks for 12 volt questions, it s a great resource... The 12 Volt
As far as Lexus specific, there is one that I read about, but it used the key fob for the car and you know how bad the range is on that! Half the reason for getting a remote start is to not be in the line of sight and be able to hit it.
If my research is correct, most aftermarket units will bypass the factory alarm system, which may be a sticking point for some. I personally could care less about a factory alarm, any thief worth his weight is gonig to have all the factory work arounds already.

Hmm, is it a DIY, or can only a professional electrician install it. I'm really hands on when it comes to my car, I did my own subwoofer electrical and hook up, plus I helped my neighbor install a pioneer flip out monitor and stuff like that. If not how much and how long would it take a shop to do the instlal, because its a PITA waiting for the car to warm up.

Another option, not remote start but it will have the heater working faster. Engine block heater, about $80 installed and it really saves the enviroment during those cold winter morning start ups. It also saves a lot of wear and tear on starters, batteries, etc. when it gets below 20F. use a timer to turn it on about 1/2 hour before you hit the remote start button. Just remember to unplug before you leave, I have dragged a 50' extention cord to work once
The VIper, Hornet, etc... line (DEI) is all DIY. The Compustar is shop installed only. If you are a DIY guy, then go with a Viper or similar and then head over to The12Volt.com and have them give you a hand with the wiring.
you'll need a Toyota security bypass module, and a key bypass box.
Here;s the link to the DEI site so you can see what units are the same, DEI SITE
Use that site to pick a unit, then shop around for the best price. You'll see there are only a few but they are sold under a dozen brand names. Just relabled.
I'll dig out my install estimate and see if I can get some part numbers for the parts you'll need.

Ok, here is the parts list I was given.
DEI part numbers...
555xw Toyota interface. $69.
DISARM (yes thats a part number) Factory alarm disarm $29
8617 Door lock interface $29
Also, they have a seperate charge for going into the doors, so they must tap into the locks in the doors, or maybe there are other controls in the doors they tap. Not sure, I didn't ask.

Hmm is that install for a viper unit or a shop install only unit? and is that how much they charged you for the install? I only see the parts, would you happen to remember how much they charged for the work?

Thats the parts list and thier respective prices.
The labor charges are
Access door. $49
Install Compustar brain. $149
This is for the Compustar install. The Viper or similar product would be the same. My installer uses all DEI componants to install the Compustar brain or a Viper brain. Labor charges are going to be the same regardless of the brain.
Looking under the dash of my GS i think it's well worth it to have someone else install it for me. I'm a DIY'er by nature, but I also know when a pro is going to be better than I am. I have a truset installer I've been going to since '87, so I sleep easy when it's in his hands.
Edit...
Regardless of what product you install you'll need to add these to bypass certain parts of the cars brain... (even the ebay thing you linked to.)

What specificly does the interface do? That way I can speak intelligently to them when I ask them about it. I trust thier work more than anyone around here, and I think it helps if I have half a clue as to what theyt are doing.
