Talking

I finally got myself a black 01 GS300 and would like to add a spoiler to it. My dealer wants to charge me $700 of it installed. I found one at RMM for $270 and another locally in S Florida for $110 unpainted but I would prefer to get it from the dealer.

Any suggestions will be welcomed.

ems,

welcome.

if you prefer the actual factory one, our lex parts guru, steve(SUPRATRD, on board) from carson toyota can get you one for $370+shipping. this is the same as you seen on the gs430. you just need to get itpainted+installed.

3ems,

I have a factory spoiler from my 98 Black GS400 with the third taillight for sale for $150. It's ready for install since your car is black also...I had replaced it with the WIN Racing style spoiler instead...

E-mail me at Brent.Liu@stjohns.org for more details...

Default Spoiler

As far as spoilers go IMHO, if you like the factory look you can get the factory spoiler or the RMM. The RMM is slightly different, but I think for the better. Do not get a Sportwing aftermarket spoiler, it is a little bit smaller than stock and doesn't look like it fits right asthetically. The RMM is a good fitting spoiler, only gripe is that they don't include a template for mounting like the lexus factory spoiler has - although that may have changed in a year. You'll also need ot adjust the trunklid springs - real easy, shoot another post out here or PM me when you are ready.

Default Trunk springs

How do you adjust the trunk "springs"?, my 2001 GS# looks like it has rods of some sort. Please shed some light.

Default Trunk Lid Springs

Pat,

you are correct they are rods, but the way they are configured they act as springs. If you look at the hinges of your trunk lid, you can see that the rod goes from the right hinge to the left quarter panel and the left hinge to the right quarter panel. Behind the interior carpeting/matting in the trunk (at hinge height on the qtr panel) you will see the rod slotted into 1 of 3 different holes, (they kind of arc slightly in an upward pattern), the original position (if I remember correctly) is in the top most slot, which provides the least amount of holding power for the trunklid, you need to move the rod (it bends enough for you to move) to the lower slot, be careful to hold the trunklid while you do this so it doesn't whack you in the head. Repeat for the other side. Just make sure that once you are done, the rods still line up in the center of the trunk, there is a little clip/guide for where the 2 rods cross. Let me know if you still have trouble and I'll try and take/post some pics.

3ems,

basically/generally , there are 3 types of spoilers for the GS. try this:

www.gtautosport.com

www.rodmillenstore.com

you can also go to our classfied section where a gent is selling fiberglass one for really cheap($59.99+shipping).

if you have a blk gs, Bliu's offer is quite good as he has the actualy factory one that is made of polyurethene, not fiberglass.

Hi Brent,

just curious, when they took off the fcatory one, were ther holes on the trunk? i guess i am asking you if the factory one was just mounted on, or does drilling required for GS w/no spoiler from the factory.

thanks.

Thanks brotha! I'll have to wait and get my car back from the shop, it's been there since yesterday. The service dept. told me a while back that there was no adjustment on the trunk?????????. I hope these people(Lexus) aren't as big of dummies as the Mercedes dealer down the road. I've only had the car 2 wks and they are not impressing me at all.

that's what a dummy service guy told me, no trunk support adjustment. Then someone on this board told me how (was it you, Mo? thanks alot), and I did it myself. Easy, but it didn't help as much as I expected. Now my trunk goes SLAM as opposed to the SLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMM before. But I did notice a change in the tension, definitely needed if you have a spoiler.

Will,

Performing some backwards engineering...the spoiler somes with four plastic nubs - not bolt holes or bolts...Next, looking at the inside of the trunk, there is an area where there is a second metal layer welded onto the trunk lid. Also, with the new WIN spoiler they drilled through both layers...

Here's my theory, there are holes drilled through the trunk lid and not through the second layer. That way, the spoiler attaches with the plastic nubs kinda like you push in and and the plastic nub head expands out to grab hold of the inside of the trunk lid. THe second layer hides the hole making a clean look from the inside....Kinda difficult without a picture I may add one for the fun of it...

Hey 3ems,

for the prices you are looking at for the aftermarket spoilers, I'd seriously consider Bliu's sale offer at $150 for a factory painted black factory spoiler, it doesn't get much cheaper. From the pictures Brent has posted of his car I would imagine that the spoiler is in immaculate condition. Just something to think about.
