Default timing belt

I took my car to the mechanic over the weekend to get my timing belt/water pump done. I asked him to keep the timing belt around so I could see how it looked since I am at 106,900 miles, which is a little over on the job..... I looked at the timing belt, and my heart dropped. I really don't think that thing would have lasted another 1000 miles, it has a million little cracks on it. I am glad I did it in time, otherwise it would have cost a ton more. Just wanted to remind you that maintnence should be done on time!

Thanks for sharing. Do you still have the belt? It would be interesting to see what it looked like.

Well, we have a non-interference engine so it wouldn't have been too bad.

Just be thankful it wasn't a Honda!

I recently had my 90K service done although I had over 96K on it. Although I felt I had more mileage to go, I also didn't want to chance it. I should have asked the mechanic to keep mine as well, but didn't do so. I did find it interesting when my mechanic said I had a slight leak in the water pump. He said he called Lexus to find out about it and they said that the water pump doesn't need to be replaced on my model..2000 GS 400. He went ahead and changed it for me without charging me anyway. Can anyone vouch for that claim by Lexus?

I had my 90k service done last week, and I feel a whole lot more confident driving knowing the belts have been changed (and that everything else was changed accordingly)!!

You are back to front. On a non-interference engine it would not damage the engine, but an interference will.

Johnny told me that our cars are in fact an interference engine which means that it would damage other things had the belt broken.

flashbang, what he means by interference engine is: if your timing belt breaks, the valves and pistons meet each other in a most unpleasant way!! meaning lots of cash to replace your damaged parts. It's better to be safe than sorry with any timing belt.
