Default Offer on a 2001 - dealer said no

I've been looking for an 01-02 430 and found two in my area at dealerships.

The first one I saw was never taken care of from what I could see so I passed on that.

I went to look at one today that had 42,000 miles on it.

2001 GS430
blk/blk
Nav/Levinson/17" chrome/spoiler
Tires - 40% / brakes - 50%

The KBB sticker was $34,000. Their window / internet was $28,991.

I put my offer in at $27,000 OTD. The first salesman accepted it then brought it to his closer who offered me $29,000 OTD. I offered about $27,500 OTD and they said they couldn't do it.

Anyone have any input on this?

Here are a few GS430s under $30K and 45K miles within 300 miles of Bay Area at autotrader.
Good luck with your search.

Does Tires-40% and brakes-50% mean they are half worn. If so then I would have them first agree on replacing these things because it could end up costing well over $1000.00 to replace them. If they don't replace them then I would walk away if they did not agree to your original price. OTD means tax and title included in the price right. Your offer was not that far from the original price and even your second offer sounded very reasonable so they are not bargaining on the car right now. Maybe give it some time and they will call you but I would look elsewhere. I guess prices in California are higher so you may not be able to get it too much lower. On the east coast you can get good deals on 01 GS430 anywhere from 22-27 with quite a few at 23-24 especially around winter. You can go on Autotrader.com and Cars.com for other vehicles. I find KBB to be pretty high most of the time and not reflect what people really pay for used cars. SInce a brand new GS is out you should be able to get some good deals.

I purchased a 2002 GS430 in April for $30,500. It had 21,700 miles and was loaded(nav, lev, spoiler). It is in MINT condition. I shopped for a couple months and got lucky and found one in San Antonio where I live. I think $27,000 is a decent number. There was a 2002 GS430 in Houston for sale on Ebay from a Lexus dealer and he was willing to take like $30,500. It had mid twenties miles and was loaded. It was on Ebay 10 days ago. I'll try and find it.

I found an 02' from a private party that has an asking price of $31,900 OBO. It's similar to the 01' I looked at on Saturday.

Now I'm wondering if I should save a bit longer for a larger down on a 03'. The 03's have perforated leather / in-dash 6 disc. The problem there is that 03's are in the next price range up..high $30's which is too much for me.

I really DON'T want NAV with a glovebox CD changer. I'm constantly listening to music and swapping discs out and it would be quite a hassle.

the 2003s have the same cd changer as 01-05, in the glove box.

One of my BIGGEST pet peeve's with my GS4 is the damn changer in the glovebox instead of the dash.

My friend has a Ford Focus, with a 6-disc changer in the dash!!!!!!

But if that's my biggest pet peeve, the car must be pretty nice.

But it really does peeve the he11 out of me.

I went and checked out the private party car.

2002 46,800 miles.
blk/blk
Nav/Levinson/17" chrome

She wanted $31,000 and said the dealer would give her $28,000 on a trade in.

I offered $28K and the check today. She said no. Edmunds reports around $27K on a trade in.

I'm glad I didn't go for it though. The car looked like it had been a sun-sitter during it's life and had dog hair all over the interior. I'm not a dog hair fan.

One thing I'm noticing is that there are a lot of 2002 430's with NAV/Chrome floating around.

I now have buyer power, because the second dealer I went to still has the car for sale. They almost sold it last night, but the guy pulled out at the last minute.

I came back to them with a new offer of $28,000 but with new tires/floormats/small paint chip repairs and a fix for the trunk tension bars.

I'm waiting for a call back.

It definitley is a buyer's market right now for used GS430s. Everyone wants to upgrade and trying to unload.

I would still stay with your original offer of 27 OTD and have them replace and fix everything before you pay. Your offer is not that low or far from their original price and other people seem to be feeling they need to bargain more. It is strange that the lady did not go for your offer since you bargained only 3 grand off the original asking price that had OBO and her car was not in perfect condition, I doubt she will get much more for it and 28 is the same price the dealer offered her for a trade in. Since the 03 is the same as the 01-02 I would'nt spend a bunch of money to get a car that is a little newer. You are talking near 05 GS300 prices at high 30's which is a completely redesigned new car. The GS is a very well built reliable car and a year or 2 newer is not going to be as big a deal. Keep looking you should be able to get a good deal on a 01-02 GS430 since a brand new model is out.

thanks (and everyone else :-) )

The dealer insists that $27K OTD is way too low and they absolutely will not make any money off the car. They swear they bought it for ~$24K and selling for $27 would either break even or make them lose money. Whatever, dealer talk I guess, but it could be true.

They are obviuosly playing a bidding war and trying to make some cash, since the primary salesman keeps telling me "other people are bidding $29K as is."

I already put in my $28K bid, but with new tires/floormats/and a small chip fix.

The guy could have had a sale tonight, but he kept telling me that his closer was out of the office today and that he was the only one who could close the deal.

They seem like they are lagging on it waiting for a higher buyer.
