Default Strange Phenomenon

As I continue my search for the right GS400 I've noticed a strange phenomenon regarding the mileage of many of the 1998 and 1999 models. What I've noticed, from the models on Autotrader, is that many are sold at around 50K miles, driven to around 80 - 85K and then sold. I understand them being sold around 85K (90K maintenance being due). The interesting thing is that the time between the sale ranges from 14 to 20 months. So, these particular vehicles are drive approximately 25K per year. Has anybody else noticed this?

Maybe not so strange - I'm just curious.

Very interesting observation, I see you have been doing your home work I bought mine with 70k on it. With a perfect history on the car and every service done to date. So even if they have a few miles more I still think you'll be ok

Not sure I understand your question. I am seeing this with the 1998 - 1999 GS400s. I've noticed that a fairly large number of GS400s (perhaps 30 - 40% of those I look at that fit into my purchase criteria) are driven approximately 27 - 28K miles per year before they're sold around 15 - 20 months later.

Glad to hear it. I'm looking at a 98 with about 84K. I'm expecting to spend some money on the 90K service but the plan is to do most, if not all of it my self. I'm fairly mechanically inclined. And, forums like this one are a great help as well.

bought 2001 GS300 at 48K miles 1 year ago trying to sell right now at 76K. I believe one big reason behind this is the GS value declines greatly once the mileage gets over 75K.

I kind of fit into that category. I bought a 98 GS4 in March of 04 with 54,000 miles. I sold it in March of 05 with 72,000 miles.

What are you guys paying for your 400s? We ought to start a deal locating network of Lexus owners to help those looking find the right one at the best price.

what i meant was, if it's not the same car being sold within a 20 to 24 months period and suddenly jack up mileage by 25k a yr, you can't really use that analysis, thats wrong.

in general there are two types of drivers, some drive around 12k to 15k a yr, and some drive aroun 5k a yr. so that's why you are seeing those difference in the price and mileage.

now if you see someone buy a car with 60k miles and then 2 yrs later with 100k miles with the same car, that's something

Default that is kinda like me...

although i know the GS will go a lot farther than 130k miles... (don't we have a GS400 owner on here with over 300k miles??) i would prefer to switch out soon after hitting 120-130k. by that time (2 years), hopefully the 00-03 gs400s will be lower in price with so much attention being shifted to the 3rd gen gs. or - maybe i'll just buy my dad's at a premium - he has a 98 GS4 with 27k miles. HAHA!

same here. our cars are strong and the engine will really last forever, but after my car hits 100k miles i might just use it as an excuse
