Let us know how much. Just in case some of us want to save money and DIY. Your story reminded me of a experience at the dealership. A tow truck pulls up and a elderly lady gets out and walks in. Tow Truck is hauling a 97 or 98 SC400, emaculate condition. Her starter went out. 2 mechanics go out to the tow truck to pull it off. I am listening to their conversation, 1 said to the other " $20 this car has less than 20,000 miles on it" Sure enough the car has 17,500 something. The lady bought the car brand new and only drive it to church and bingo. Rest of the time her grand kids is driving her around. Starter died of old age and corrosion. Can you imagine. Reliable to a point huh?

Part was $270 (starter) and the labor was 5 hours. Was about $800 total. I know I could have taken it somewhere else but time is money. Car was there... Lexus parts aren't cheap.

Wow, that's a lot of cash. Then again on the 400 there is a lot of work trying to get to it.

Same thing ended up costing me $1050 here in Seattle at the Lexus dealership. 60,000miles on a 1999 GS400. I think they said the starter was $400. I could have had it done cheaper somewhere else but I would not of got a loaner, and by going to the dealer I've got a better chance of getting satisfaction if something goes wrong . I guess the starter is in a really bad place to get at and labor is the big expense.

Did you get a rebuilt starter or was yours new? They charge $95 an hr for the labor here.

Brand new OEM, no rebuild. Yes, the starter is harder to get to on the 400 as opposed to the 300.

i'd be singing for jou right now @ $2.17/g for 93. I'm paying $2.39/g and thats the best possible price up here. Most want $2.49/g.

TRY THAT ON FOR SIZE!

Car has 64K on it btw. The past few times it would start, or if it didnt, I would turn the key a few times and it would start or I would wait a little bit and then it would... Now nothing. Time to drive the beater... No a/c and it is hot here!
These parts will need to be replaced every once in a while......Lexus vehicles are some (if not THE) most reliable on the road overall. Nothing last forwver, which includes items on a Lexus.
