I’ve got a Black Onyx ’98 GS300 and have been doing some searching on the side marker lights. I’ve thought of replacing the OEM orange side markers with the clear ones or even smoking them like DaveGS4 did, but I just thought of another idea.
I have to do some paint touchup on my front bumper (some idiot hit my front bumper in a parking lot and took off after leaving a nice white scrape on my black bumper) and was thinking, why don’t I just paint over the orange side markers when the rest of the bumper’s being retouched? Does this sound stupid? Has anyone else done this before? Would I need to remove the bulbs so that they don’t keep lighting up when the headlights are on, or would they not even shine through since the markers would be dark black? Or if I remove the bulbs, would the exterior light failure indicator stay on permanently?
What do you all think? I know it sounds kind of foolish (and I’m sure not legal), but I was just curious if anyone else had tried doing this as an alternative to the orange side markers.
IMHO if you just paint over the marker and leave it there it wont look right. I think you should either smoke it since you have a black car or remove the side marker and do some body work, fill in the space and repaint. Obviously the first will be cheaper but the 2nd choice will look cleaner.
Yeah, I never thought of just filling in the holes...is that very difficult to do, or would any competent body shop be able to do this? How about the wiring from the bulb, what happens to all that?

it shouoldn't be hard at all, just mold it off, sand and that's it. since you are repainting the bumper it should be a done deal easy
the bulb outlet, you can just use electrical tape and cover it up, no biggie. there shouldn't be any warning light on the dash
Or you can go to an RC / hobby shop. Buy a can of black paint for the RC boddies. That paint is transparent with 2-3 coats of it. Spray your lenses. Then clear coat them, and you will have some nice blacked out lenses. Oh, and you can get different colors, to be a true ricer.
