I have the IS 300 but the GS 300/400 forum is a bit more active so I figured the knowledge base is higher over here, so that's why I posted this here also.
I always have changed my own and I'm looking for opinions or advice on what filters fit the IS 300 and which are the best. Does the GS 300 use the same filter? What are the numbers of the filters? I see my car has a Toyota filter on it now. I live in South Florida and plan on using 5W-30 weight oil, what are you using and is it synthetic or petroleum based?
Lots of info on the site re: oil changing and using.
Seems to be general agreement that the Lexus or Toyota (same filter - different logo) is the best choice.
There's a lively discussion on synthetic vs conventional. Some very long threads not too long ago.
Bottom line as I see it -- conventional 5-30 or 10-30 w/5k mile changes of oil and filter will do the job and provide long engine life. Some on the site prefer synthetic and some of those do filter changes every other synthetic oil change. Others cite engineering sources that claim synthetic is of no additional value.
aye Toyota oil filters would work ,,,, there are new Oil Filters done by K&N you might wanna check out just a thing if you wanna try something new ,, how good they are is still unknown to me. but I always use synthitic oil Mobil 1. I used to race in Rallys back in Arabia and from those days till now am hooked to this oil because it has always worked great for me on high preformance cars and still working great on my day to day driving.
IS300, ES300, GS400/300, LS400, LX400. They all use the same oil filter. (Talk about cost reduction). You can go to any Toyota dealer and buy an oil filter there. Just ask for the one for Avalon. It will fit fine and will cost a bit less than Lexus dealer charges.
As for the oil, I use Royal Purple synthetic oil. Most people here swear by Mobil 1 oil. I use synthetics because it makes the engine runs cleaner. Speaking from experience.
Hey MGS4, that's a good tip just the type I was looking for. I like to pre-fill my filters with fresh oil before installing them. This removes those seconds of time it takes the oil pump to fill it. The filter is at a slight angle but I should be able to fill it most of the way.
