Angry

Hit a pothole that stretched accross the entire road saturday morning, causing $900 damage to week old rims. I was apparently the 7th car of the night to either blow out tires or damage rims. Anybody in "law" out there? Do I stand any chance at getting some $$ out of the city?

i feel your pain too man. i live in dc and travel to nyc all the time. and needless to say both cities have the crappiest roads ever when it comes to potholes. that's why i went with 18" wheels and not 19's or 20's. but still even with 18" it's still a challenge to avoid all the potholes. anyway, a friend of mine said you can call the city and issue a claim just like you do with insurance. i don't know about where you live, but you can do that in DC. sorry i don't have any more details cause i didn't need to do that YET. but i have a feeling it's just a matter of time before i do.
if that doesn't work, how about trying to go through your insurance. i'm sure your deductable is less than $900. just a thought.

I lived in Manhattan until about 10 years ago. In the mid 80s they passed a law that said you could only sue for damages from a pothole if the city had previously been notified it existed. Talk about a rip-off. So, all of a sudden the lawyers were hiring guys to go out and map and report all the potholes in NYC.

If you were lucky? and hit a pothole that'd been reported you had a chance to collect (but I'll bet a small chance at that). If the pothole showed up the night before you hit it and it hadn't been reported you were SOL.

Wonder if that law still exists....

I just love government

i had two friend who were driving in the Wall Street area in nyc and they went over those metal plates that they lay down when they are doing road construction. One of them cracked their oil pan and the other one cracked his tranny as they were driving over the metal plates because the metal plates were not laid down securely on the road. in any case, they both called the city to file a claim...(i believe it was the city agency involved with transportation) and one of them actually received money from the city however my other friend didnt even though they both had their car damaged at the same location at the same time...the city agencies can be real screwy.

yeah alot of people tell me that on the road.. strangers I mean ! thank god nothing happened (knock on wood AGAIN !) I tried to avoid driving at night and IN THE RAIN cuz you can't see the potholes because its covered up by the water.

You guy in the WestCoast have it made when it comes to road conditions. You don't have to deal with salt, snow, hail... all you have to worry about is curvy roads. If I had your roads, I'd be going 21's well.. maybe...

Exactly -- move away from those rusty, crumbly East coast piles of rubble they call "cities" and head out to the Western USA.

Our roads are still whole, and if they do have a problem, you don't have to wait for decades for the unions to make progress fixing them. I travel monthly to Boston and NYC and am constantly amazed at how crappy the roads are back there. Worse yet, the 9-5 unions just can't keep up with the road rot that constantly evolves.

Of course, the West just can't seem to get it right when it comes to mass transportation. That's why our roads have to be so good -- we'd all storm the capitol if we had to drive on crappy roads because there isn't another way to get around. I guess we love our cars too much out here...

Thx...Doug

it happened to me to a while back and I had the insurance fix it and the city paid for 4 new rims and 2 new tyres (since the other 2 wernt damaged at all) and they also repainted my front end and baught me 2 new head lights even though I didnt need them , but my point is the city will fix it if you complained and filed a police report

Biggie, lemme ask you something, your city would they still give you money if you had 20's on? I mean, the city might say that 20's are too extreme for this type of road conditions and not give me any money at all. Like 18's would sound reasonable because its not too big. 20's on the otherhand the city would say its my fault for putting abnormally large wheels.

Don't have to be on the left coast... Atlanta has great weather and roads, too! More humid than California, but no earthquakes

Where I live the roads aren't that bad either.

East TN

No hurricanes (ofcourse, lol)
No tornadoes (because mountains stop them)
No earthquakes
Not as hot nor humid as Atlanta.
And just the right amount of snow in the winter and sunshine in the summer, avg year-round temp is about 60 (around 75 in the summer) :-)

But there is nothing cool that happens here, like car shows, big concerts, anything big, doesn't happen here !

Even though some places may have it all good climate wise, no place has it ALL good.

Another bad thing about this place is that since its quite hilly, I can't lower my car nor put any body kit on it !

On the potholes thing, ask the city to fix it. Most insurance companies won't fix it because you have "aftermarket" wheels and therefore those aren't covered under your insurance policy. Your city may say that too and not reimburse you. But you can try !

dieselman never the less even if you do have 20's they should fix it if they say that you have large rims you say they have crappy roads if the city would have provided better roads then this wouldnt have happened always argue your case usauly they wont take it to court but if they decide to do so take it court you have a better chance of winning than they do and you will get more money than just fixing your rims if you do decide to take it to court
