My intent was definitely not to inflame you. I may be wrong in this instance, but I know people who continually try to see how far they can go on a tank of gas. Some people are really busy, and think of gas as an afterthought. They don't look until they run out. It is THESE people I was referring to.

I have 23 year old twin daughters who both have cars, and I know that gas is the last thing on their minds. When I saw that they were runnning their tanks low as a regular habit, I talked to them about it. They didn't run out, but ran REAL low more than once. I suspect that they are not the only ones out there doing this.

So please take my comments constructively, because THAT is how they were meant. This IS a forum, after all.

Have a great day!
You didnt inflame me at all.
I just wanted to get some more facts out there. Not everyone is aware of all the workings of cars these days and if someone comes on here and says a blanket statement like "If you run your car out of gas you will burn up your fuel pump" then they take that as gospel.
Believe it or not but romini is the first person I have ever heard of that they ran they're car out of gas one time and it killed the pump.
Most of the time when a pump goes bad it slowly starts losing the ability to maintain pressure. So its kinda gradual (Sp?)
Not an all at once type deal.
Again you didnt inflame me whatsoever and no apologies are needed.

Okay,
I feel better now. It IS very unusual to have a pump go out the very first time you run out of gas. That is rare. Usually the pump failure is an accumulation of abuse over a long time. The pump is pretty sturdy, and is built to withstand a lot of abuse. Perhaps his pump was already tired.

I had a 1986 Mustang GT w/ 5.0L engine that had a whiny pump for just that reason. It just got noisier and noisier until I finally changed it. You could not talk in the car because of the noise. others burned out quickly, and took the relay with it...go figure. The pump on the Mustang was about 90 bucks wholesale, but I think our pumps are more than that, right?

Hey it is great to be able to share comments and opinions. I appreciate your candor.
