Default THE PUMP NEEDS FUEL TO COOL ITSELF

The in-tank fuel pump also needs fuel to keep cool.

We all know that running low on fuel is an invitation for the pump to pick up anything left in the bottom..(including water, dirt, etc), and that is not a good idea.

I try to fill up before the light comes on if at all possible. I've never run out, but I have come close. I also notice that the engine seems to run stronger around 1/4 tank, and noticed it on my earlier car (92 Frod Mustang GT) as well.

I think the potential for expensive damage outweighs any gain realized by running the tank nearly dry.

Your car seems faster around 1/4 tank or less because it's lighter.

Default Okay so it happened to me.

I was on the freeway today to 110 km/h, I then pushed the gas pedal a little to speed up some more and then the engine just cut out. Thank God I was in the slow lane and the traffic was light otherwise it could've got ugly.

I pulled over to the side of the road and noticed that the A/C was still blowing air but the air wasn't cold and that the outside temp gauge was reading "- -" instead of numbers. The engine warning light wasn't on. So I restarted and the thing worked fine.

I dropped in to my Lexus dealer and they ran a diagnostic test and said that the engine did not record any "error codes". They also said they checked the sensors but could not determine any fault.

It seems like this is a common problem. Has anyone been able to identify a common cause for this ? This is a pretty dangerous thing to have happen, particularly if I am trying to cross an intersection. I'm not sure I trust this car anymore.
