that's a pretty dangerous thing to do. if you ever get into an accident (touch wood) and have a head on collision, you will probably get a very nice reverse L on your forehead

do not do that

haha just a little humor... I guess my time over at supra forums has turned me into a bit of a "basdid" as we call them in boston

Seriously though, the steering wheel does look better. but airbags deploy so freakin fast... that emblem could do some serious damage.

Good idea, but the execution needs improvement.

Again, not trying to be mean, but it seemed like the setup of the century for a mastercard commercial

John

Edit: some info on airbags...http://www.airbagonoff.com/ airbags are constantly being improved, SRS gen II is much better that the first gen, but a bag deploying at 200 MPH would launch a plastic emblem pretty darn far...

If that's the case how come the 01-04 steering wheels are safe? If a strong epoxy was used to mount the emblem wouldn't it just stay in place when the airbag deployed?

I've never wrecked mine so don't know how the airbag works, from what I understood the center of the wheel folds up/down when it deploys.

I'm reposting the pic from the first page. Notice how the chrome L is in an internal circle that is separate from the airbag? The L does not move while the airbag deploys around it.

In this retrofit case that you are talking about, the L will probably stay in place on the airbag but the whole airbag comes at you with the L still on it.

I hope you understand my explanation.

I saw an 02 Q45 with an plastic infiniti emblem at a junk yard. The airbag cover split in such a way that the emblem was entirely on lower half.

That's a very nice looking (98-00 GS) steering wheel.
The chrome emblem (added to a 98-00 GS) does not seem to be a problem in an accident, at least to me. Here's why. The chrome emblem is attached to the air-bag cover, not the air-bag itself. The air-bag cover will either fold up or down out of the way so the air-bag can deploy from underneath it. I've had an air-bag deploy on one of my other cars (non-Lexus) and there was no way the air-bag cover would hit the driver's face. If so, it would cause a lot of damage to the driver even without the chrome L on it because of the velocity. Thankfully the hard air-bag cover does fold out of the way and the air-bag is what hits the face. In my accident, I never even hit the airbag because my seat was so far back and the seat-belt automatically cinched up tight in the impact.

the airbag cover will flip upward, unveiling the airbag ! yes, the add-on dash kit is an add-on real wood trim with a 100 % color match !
