Angry Wheel Bearing

I have a '98GS400 and when I drive I hear this rubbing noise (not rubber, but metal grinding), its been coming for a while. When I first showed it to the dealer, to my surprise they said nothing was wrong! , so I took it to another highly reputable shop, and they said my wheel bearing is almost done for. My question is: is this a normal thing to do for a car that has 116,000kms on it (72.5K Miles)mostly highway and 6 years old. I live in Calgary, Canada and it is winter driven (not daily). The cost to replace it (or them (i might get both done)) isn’t too bad, but it shouldn’t go in the first place. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

those are wear and tear items, so i guess it's a matter of time. i have seen them going bad a lot sooner than 70k miles too.
