Since my last car was a 5-speed I really liked the idea of the E-shift on my '98 GS400, but soon lost interest because the transmission was so slow to respond.
I believe I read somewhere that there is a dealer fix that makes the tranny shift better.
My right e-shift button broke at 60k miles (it still works, but it doesn't go all the way in anymore) and the left one feels spongy (not crisp like the rear upshift buttons).
I took it to my dealer, and under my extended warranty, it would cost them $1200 (cost to replace the entire steering wheel) because they say that there are no individual parts for the steering - everything comes as one piece...
I had my steering wheel replaced on my 1998 very early on when I complained about a minor blemish on the leather wrap on the backside of wheel. The did tell me that it is one unit with no separate replacable parts. They gladly replaced the wheel free of charge under warranty with out even blinking and no coercing whatsoever from me (amazing, but typical Lexus service), but did tell me in passing it costs $1200 as a non warranteed part. Ouch !

How much is covered under the extended warranty?

The buttons are covered by my extended warranty (non-Lexus, by the way - first mistake) but, as was posted, the steering wheel is one piece so if something goes wrong with it (unless it is the air bag assembly) they have to replace the whole thing.
My extended warranty company is balking at this because it really should be a $100-$200 fix but the price is way more than that... I've been living with it for a year now.
Sounds like you need to work your way up the management chain of your extended warranty company to get them to fix it.
If they say it should be a $200 fix then ask them to find someone who can do it for that. Otherwise it's a $1,200 fix and they should pay for it.
My experience with companies like this is that you find out the president's name and write or call him. Most times that takes care of it if the company is legit. If they are a rip-off you're out of luck, but at least you've gotten the final word from the top.
