Default Instrument Panel Flash

Has anyone had their instrument panel flash on them? I've looked for previous posts on the subject and have not really seen much. Basically, the entire instrument panel (including the Nav screen) fade in brightness, then a couple seconds later brighten back up again. It does not happen all the time, just randomly. I seem really to notice it on highway drives. So far it has been more a concern then a problem.

I'm not sure it is related, but my GS silently stalled while waiting at a light yesterday. I put it in neutral and it started back up again with no problem, but that a trip. I read threads with this happening on the IS. Seems to be possibly tied to the intake.

Anyway...I would love to hear from anyone who has experienced anything like this.

Default correct me if im wrong...

when your panel and nav "flash", do you notice if your driving under an over pass or a bridge... i believe that when the surroundings get darker, the entire panel dims and when you get back to normal lighting, the lights seem like they "flash" back to the normal lighting... if im not mistaken, this does NOT happen at night, right?? well, this happens to me all the time and if its NOT normal, then i have a problem

The first couple of times I saw this happen I was a little freaked out too, then I realized that it only happens when I drive into my garage or other dark place. I have the non-navigation Nakimichi setup.

That's normal then. It gets brighter when the light outside gets brighter. It's trying to lessen the strain on your eyes from the cluster lights.

Hummm...never really noticed that when entering darker areas, but I think that could be it. You are also right that it does not seem to happen at night. That is really strange if the instrument cluster would dim for the fraction of a second you are going under a bridge at highway speeds, but I guess that is it.

I'll try to be more cognizant of it next time I enter an underpass or dark place. Thanks for the feedback!

Mine does this as well and I have the Levinson with Navigation. It thinks it's night when going under a decent sized bridge and then flips back when it catches the daylight again. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

On your car's dash (very top of the dash, near the edge of the front windshield) there are 2 sets of reddish/black plastic covered domes. These domes are 2 separate sets of light sensors--one is for the climate control, and the other is for sensing the ambient light outside (and accordingly adjusts the interior dash light brightness).

The first few times the brightness switching happens it catches you by surprise as it switches right away to a different setting (i.e. when going into a tunnel). Too bad they didn't just make it a little gradual in brightness transition.
