Default Headlights

Hello, I have a 98 GS400. My headlights are old and very yellow. I’m looking for new headlights. Any suggestions that’s not super expensive? I’ve seen a lot on eBay for 130-230. Does anyone know if these are any good or are they bad quality. I don’t want really different headlights than oem but some small differences are fine. Here is what I was looking at.

Thanks.

Hey there! If you honestly want to save some money, I'd just go with restoring the headlights you have! I've done a few different "Headlight restoration kits" that I've ordered from Amazon and I've always been happy with the results. I've used this kit two times now - on my 2GS and my 2016 RAV4. Took about 45 minutes and it cost ~$18.

I've had excellent results with Turtle Wax Headlight Restorer. It comes with abrasive paper, but I didn't have to use it. I got better results with just the polish than I did with several different sanding schemes.

The GS 400 came with HID headlights stock. If you want to replace them, you'll need to find a pair of HID headlights, which may be hard.

Alternatively, there are guides here on how to separate the glass/plastic clear lens from the backing of the housing, so that you can separate the clear lens from a pair of non-HID headlights, and swap them so you can retain your HID bulbs and get brand new clear lenses. I think the only other option is to ditch HID and go halogen/LED, but I think you'll need to do a conversion, I am not sure. Just please read up on it first.

I think either way, you'll be buying new headlights.

Or you could see how well you can use a headlight restoration kit! In which case, you'll want to clear coat the headlights when you're done. Otherwise, all that hard work will be back to yellow in short time.

I've been running these D-Spec lights in my 2000 GS400 for 3 years, and they're great.

Note:
  • My car had the self-leveling HID's, and these aftermarket headlights were still plug and play.
  • The low beams have a crisp horizontal cut-off, with the standard left lane joggle/drop (no glare)! They are amazing.
  • They make you old car look like a new car.
  • I run H1 LED's in them (search amazon), which requires you to run them with the back cover removed, leaving the headlight unsealed. I've never had an issue running like this, other than mentally disliking the setup.
  • One of the lenses has a vertical crack. No headlight is bullet proof. It still works fine, and is hard to spot.
I have the old OEM self-leveling HIDs if you want to buy them. I would go with the newer aftermarket headlights though. Much better.

No, no, no, no, no!
