Default Coil overs

So I have a question...for the people who have coilovers. What spring rates do you have? Seeing what the common rates are for the big body cars. Or the recommended spring rates. Looking to do DD the car with some spirited driving also. Thanks!

I had found an article on jzs147.com.au about the spring rates for some of the more common ones. idk how accurate they are but maybe someone can verify:

Tein CS: 5kg/7kg
Tein Flex: 12kg/10kg
HKS LS+: 9kg/7kg

Supposedly for the front, you want somewhere in the 8-12kg range and 6-10kg for the rear for it to be comfy and not rock hard.

Tein Super Street: 8kg/6kg

Here is a site for all the other Tein setups:

Cool thanks DJ. 8/6k springs seem really really soft especially for such a heavy car. I have that spring rate on my RX7. I always thought because the car was bigger and heavier you wanted a little bit of a stiffer spring to compensate for the weight difference? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have PBM 18/14 and i think its perfect for spirited driving and DD. I wouldn't go with a softer set.

hey joewitafro, I was wondering about a higher spring rate of 18K/14K or 18K/16K (currently at 14K/12K) as I'm interested in this setup.
But most importantly how are the roads in your area and how do they ride? are they all perfect/smooth, with a few potholes? Or are the roads your typical pothole ridden, big city roads. Can you shed some light into how this setup rides, and how the cabin feel is in these different scenarios.

Could you be as descriptive as you can (i.e.- would someone like a mom or girlfriend barely be able to tolerate the ride, or would they say the handling feels great and comfortable...), as this would help clear up a few things.

I hear the HKS are a very nice, well-round setup for DD. Although I don't think they would be great drifting type coilovers or anything. More for comfort than spirited driving.

Joe I have been looking into the PBM coilovers also. I had them on my other car and do not have any complaints. Look forward to hearing about description of tolerance with them.

Kene, and others wondering...

I live in the suburbs outside of Portland, Oregon, and have driven everything from the city streets and old roads of portland which are very beat up, bumpy roads with my girlfriend and she didn't mind the ride, and said it was comfortable. I feel these "harder" coils definitely allow me to feel the road a lot more, and most of the roads I drive are fairly decent quality but rest assured I rail my car quite hard, and bumps and dips are handled really well.

With these coilovers the car very much so feels like a "performance" luxury car. You will need to take driveways slow, speed bumps actually feel better than in my moms 4runner with a tow package, my car hops over them and the front end feels a tad spongy when your going this slow over the bumps, very tolerable.. I have been DDing for the past year until I blew up my motor.

The mother feel... It might be better to have a 16/12 or 14/12 for a slightly softer setup if you want to be more on the luxury side of things, but my car feels much safer with tight suspension and allows me to predict the car a lot more than if it were to body roll or the suspension was a lot softer. I would say these coils could be drifted on easily and the quality has been top notch so far. If I drive nicely I would think my grand mother could deal with the slight harsh ride considering my seats are very plush and I have appropriately sized tires to soak up some bump. Here's a video of my front suspension on a spirited drive in the country roads that are fairly decent.

Thanks Joe,

that really helps to get visualization of how your setup works. I really appreciate it.

Hey Joe, what are your wheel specs on the car? Also tire size? Can the coilovers go any lower? Do you have a pic of your ride height? Thanks!
