i have a 1998 lexus gs300, when ever i am sitting idle the car acts like it wants to shut off, it putters, at times it does shut off, this only happens when i am sitting idle in the drive or reverse gear, when in neutral its ok. after take off the car drives normal. i used a diagnostic machine and the code i get is p1349 vvt malfunction. I have had three different explainations for this. 1) i need a new coil, car has 3 but one may be misfiring 2) solenoid needs replacement 3) valve cover needs replacement so far i have changed the oil and spark plugs

 

wrong section, 98 is 2nd gen.

p1349 is vvti code, most likely the vvti oil passage is blocked. run some atf in your motor for a few minutes and that should unblock it.
