Default a big "click"

I have a 96 1st Gen.
When changing gear from neutral to R or D; or from D to R; or from R to D; the car always feels a big "kick in". (It is like there is some room before in the gear force then it gives a sudden move feeling). It is like the changing gear at a high engine speed. Does anyone know what could most likely be the cause of it?

a few more questions to clarify the issue:

how long have you had this car?
have you had any tranny issues before?
When was the last time the car was serviced?
Check engine light on?
Any other issues besides a large "kick"?

That happens if I shift gear before my car is warmed up.

The engine was warmed-up
I have had the car for 2 years.
It has not tranny issue before.
The last time it had service is about 6 months ago.
This problem was there since I own the car but it looks getting more serious.
The engine light is not on. No other issue beside the kick.
