I have a 1996 GS. Recently, I have noticed when I am at a stop light (and the wind blows right), I can see smoke coming from under my car. I also noticed that I have about 3 - 4 drops of oil on the floor in my garage in the morning. Is this common in the 1996s? Where could the oil leak be coming from possibly? Please help. Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, for reading!
This may be as simple as the oil plug seal cracked and weeping a few drops every now and then. It happens when the seal is reused that one time too many, and the plug is tightened too much, causing the seal to compress and crack.
Wipe the pan plug area dry and watch for further drops.
It can be replaced quite easily, but may require an assistant to thumb plug the 12mm drain hole while the plug is removed and reinstalled with a new seal.
Toyota dealer is a good source for a replacement.... a fifty cents part ; 12mm I.D.
Thanks, Tammy! I sure hope and pray it is what you expect. Can I get to the pan plug by just looking underneath? Have you had this same problem? If it is the pan plug, would I still get the "smoking" from underneath? What I mean is what would it be leaking on to cause the "smoking"? Thanks, again.
You may need a ramp or jack to allow enough room to reach the oil pan.
Yes, I have broken several seals determining at what torque they crack and break (40 Ft Lbs.)
I always apply a little axle grease to mine prior to reinstalling the plug.
The oil drips on the exhaust pipe as you drive ... The catalytic converter increases the exhaust temperature to 700+ degrees.
