Default Check Engine Light

Hello All, Im from the SC300 part of the forum but my wife has a '95 GS300 which has the 'Check Engine' light on.

I pulled the battery terminal in order to try and reset the computer and I think it did. The light went away for a couple of days but came back. I just want to know how can I check what code it is ?

Anyone . . . Anyone ? . . .
Please

Use a wire to connect TE1 and E1 under the Diagnostic cover and the ECU will flash the code to you. My guess is that you will see 71 (EGR malfunction). The cause is typically a clogged EGR valve or a faulty vacuum modulator.

The following site shows a schematic of the diagnostic ports and a list of the OBDI and OBDII codes:

link13, is there anyway to cure the 2 symptoms you mentioned the vehicle might be goin through? my check engine light is doing the same thing. it would go on for a few miles then go off. now it's on permanantly. does a shop have to fix the problem and what does something like this roughly cost? thank you

Based on my own experience, cleaning the EGR valve is a temporary fix. My brother cleaned the EGR valve on my car very thoroughly and, after about 2 weeks, I started to see the check engine light again. I mentioned it when I took my car for the 120K mile service last year and my mechanic said it was most likely the vacuum modulator. He tested that and it was faulty. I believe the part was about $65-70. I don't think labor would be very much if you have someone do the work. My mechanic had a good bit of the EGR disassembled due to other service, so he did not charge me labor for the vacuum modulator.
