Vision only is the future. But there needs to be vision, no camera in the front bumper is stupid. This is one of those things that shows the disconnect between aspiration and reality, very Steve Jobs like.
That's how I see it too.
On machines it is common practice to "step" the motor with pulses and by this it can be calculated how far something rotational has moved, in this case the tires.
But, it's not a substitute for external sensors or at least a camera that can detect in real time.
The YouTube video is 4 months old. It was incorrect then and is incorrect now.
Model Y does not have radar or HD radar, it’s camera only.
The only way Model Y sees the parking block or curb is from the camera at the top of the windshield. It approximates the distance and uses its best guess as to where the block or curb is when it’s out of sight of the camera.
They are talking about Hardware 4.0 or "HW4" which is Tesla's newest round of cameras and computing hardware. That's it. Just new cameras and a new computer to make it all work. It was rumored that HW4 would include HD Radar but we haven't had confirmation of any vehicles actually shipping with radar.
Forgot to post this last night. This is the view from the Rivian at beautiful Newark airport. I do like it more than my old 3. Parking sensors and switching between front and rear cameras is in the lower left. Camera quality could be better, but overall it's a good system
This is what it looks like in the Model Y without Tesla Vision (equipped with parking sensors):
No perimeter outline or 360 view, just an outline at the front/front corners + back/back corners and distance measurements given in inches. Pretty simple but 100% accurate and straight forward.

they can offer a lot since they're good with losing 33k on each one.

I got a great deal
They're stuck with pandemic era pricing on a lot of their components so it's no surprise that they're looking to cut costs. Add onto that the need to build out service centers, their odd desire to build 'spaces' (showrooms), and trying to spool up a new factory I think the Q4 2024 target for being profitable is overly ambitious.
But that doesn't have anything to do with tesla vision parking
