Would anyone have any issues with buying a brand new 2019 ES 350 Luxury that never sold? They have taken almost $10k off sticker price. Anything I should look for other than tires having flat spots? Would you advise against buying it?

 

Check the mileage to make sure it wasn't a demo or salesperson's vehicle.

 

If it's truly brand new and not, as barryabko says, a loaner or demo, I'd consider it. I think I'd try for more off the sticker though. Remember that a 2019 will be a 3 year old model in about 4 months. The 2019, 20, 21 are identical as far as mechanicals go. Maybe some trim differences but that's all. Check the mileage and check what a 2019 is worth on Edmunds or blue book...
Also, in the fall Lexus will be closing out the 21's for the 2022 models and offering discounts... Good Luck with whatever you decide...

 

Check the exterior. I bought my Avalon when it was a year and a half on the lot.

200ish miles, which they explained were from the manager.

Only other thing is check the surroundings. Mine was parked near some large pine trees, which left one or two sap marks on it.

Keep in mind as well that cars age much much faster outside. In the Midwest, sun damage can be common (check sidewalls for cracking on tires).

When I was in the Pacific Northwest and things were wet for six straight months a year, mold/moss or such would grow around the lettering on the car in the gas cap area etc.

Mine was $43k sticker. Came in at $37 thinking they would say no and go higher. They accepted the deal right away. Felt great but then started wondering if we could have gone even lower as they had two exact colors and featured cars but of the current year.

point being, go low. Worst is they could say no. M

 

This is what I always say. Hit 'em with a lowball figure. Like Bee says: " the most they can say is no..."

 

Here are a few other things to think about related to that car and its purchase price.

The car is now 2+ years old. Had you bought the car in May, 2019, a fair price at that time would have been around $5500-6500 off of MSRP. So, that means that the additional discount that the dealer is offering because the car is 2+ years old is only around $3500-4500 more than what the discount would have been had you bought the car 2 years ago. That additional discount is substantially less than what would be considered to be normal depreciation for a 2+ year old ES.

I also just did a quick check with KBB. If you bought that car today, and if you went to trade it in next week, its trade-in value would be around $35,000, which is probably $7000-8000 lower than what the dealer wants you to pay for the car.

Also note that, if you buy that car, for the next 3-4 years, its re-sale or trade-in value will be around $12,000 to $15,000 lower than would be the case if you bought a new 2021 ES right now, and you could likely buy a new and similarly-equipped 2021 Luxury ES right now for only about $5000 more than what the dealer is offering on that 2019 ES.

It may well be a great car, but a $10,000 discount for a 2+ year old new ES equates to a significantly smaller discount than what I would be willing to pay.

 

When I purchased my 2019 ES350 F-Sport in September of 2019, I got $5800 off of sticker in addition to an extremely low interest rate through Lexus financial.

In my opinion, 10K off is not enough. They can label it new but it is almost 3 years old. My biggest concern is why the heck did it not sell for that amount of time? Is the selling dealer the originating dealer?

My suggestion is if you do come to a financial agreement, I would have an auto body expert that has absolutely no affiliation with that dealership examine the car for past damage that includes water or flood. You live in Massachusetts so flood is unlikely unless the car originated from another Lexus dealer in another state.

Sounds like a lot but isn't all that much, especially since the 2022 MY will sell somewhat soon. Also first year so there's probably a handful of TSBs and build issues that might creep up. A new car should have 100% assurance or as close to it as possible. Not "would you have any concerns"

 

Who is the dealership? I have had good luck with Lexus of Watertown, Northborough and Warwick RI.

 

I would buy it right now.
