System shutdown
Good thing it didn't get past the throttle body into the intake runners and down into the valves. That would have been a mess to clean up. Would likely have jammed into a valve and then melted if the engine was at full temperature. Or worse, get into a cylinder.
The real question is - what the heck would have caused that to break? Did they charge you for the service?

$50 for the part; $175 labor to install it. They told me that was because the manufacturer’s 4-year warranty expired earlier this year and my L/C warranty does not cover it. (I’m going to follow up with the service manager.) When I asked the service technician what would’ve caused it to break, he just shrugged.

The cost seems cheap, but I would think this would be a covered repair unless there was some evidence that you (or someone else) broke it. My wife's car is a CPO, and the warranty info is about as close to a bumper to bumper warranty as you can get on a used car. I would even expect that the towing bill would be covered by the roadside assistance program.
