Default System shutdown: Update

The real question is - what the heck would have caused that to break? Did they charge you for the service?
$50 for the part; $175 labor to install it. They told me that was because the manufacturer’s 4-year warranty expired earlier this year and my L/C warranty does not cover it. (I’m going to follow up with the service manager.) When I asked the service technician what would’ve caused it to break, he just shrugged.

the fact that it is not covered by l/c warranty is concerning considering the extra cost for it

The cost seems cheap, but I would think this would be a covered repair unless there was some evidence that you (or someone else) broke it. My wife's car is a CPO, and the warranty info is about as close to a bumper to bumper warranty as you can get on a used car. I would even expect that the towing bill would be covered by the roadside assistance program.

I met with the service manager to ask him about that. He reiterated that there are things covered by the manufacturer’s warranty (which expired earlier this year) that are not covered by the L/C warranty. Provided no details. The roadside assistance program did cover the towing bill.
