2022 ES 350 Ultra Luxury
When ACC is engaged, braking is jerky in curves. I previously owned a Ford Edge where the braking in curves was very smooth. Anyone else have this problem?

 

Can you be a little more clear about what you are talking about? In my 2023, if you brake while DRCC is active, it will disengage. I presume that's the same for you, so you must be referring to the radar controlled curve speed reduction, I guess? I have not noticed that the curve speed reduction creates any jerkiness. It doesn't slow it down as much as I'd like (only ever 2-3 mph) but the speed reduction is very gradual and always smooth. I'd recommend getting it looked it.

 

It's not always perfectly smooth. I use it often and it can sometimes tap the brakes abruptly. Probably not much you can do about that. AI may not totally take over the world

I definitely feel the instant the auto cruise takes away the acceleration when the wheel is turned enough in a curve, but I wouldn't call it jerky. In my mind it has always been explained more by taking acceleration away rather than braking. I'm a big fan of it, I have other cars with auto cruise and I've always had to manually deactivate it for an interstate onramp/offramp/merge curve. Lexus lets me keep it on the whole time.

 

this is very informative; I was always relying on lane keeping to handle the curve and since lane keeping generally doesn’t curve so eagerly, maybe this is why I was only seeing slight slowdowns. I’ll try actually turning my steering wheel next time to see what happens

I agree that the feeling feels like a reduction in the accelerator rather than actual braking, but being in a hybrid es I think it’s often using the opportunity to do regenerative braking. I wonder if a non-hybrid experiences braking?

 

Yeah, I know that the reduction in speed was a feature of the safety system suite 2.5 or whatever Toyota/Lexus is calling it. Older systems don't have it, slowing down on a curve is kind of a new thing. Dig into the safety system to find the best description of what is going on. Hint: there is an icon in your instrument panel of a diamond road sign with a curvy road arrow in it when this kicks in.

 

Yup, I am referring to the only-slight degree of slowdown that I observe when that zig-zag diamond sign is up. I only mention my comment because it appears that my experiences contrast from those of people in the 2023 RX (who are in safety system +3.0), who say that the car slows down too much. Anyways I think it was because of my own usage patterns.

Incidentally, don't you think that slowing down when you're turning the steering wheel is a bit too late to be slowing down? I guess this really is for curves not for turning 90 degrees I do *not* have the guts to that with this system.
